Crypto Deposit, Withdrawal and Transfer Terms Explained (2026)

Updated Rules checked 2026-10-17

A deposit moves money or crypto into your exchange account; a withdrawal moves it out. With crypto, the exchanges’ Chinese interfaces use several words for each: 充值, 儲值 and 充幣 for deposits, 提領, 提幣 and 提現 for withdrawals. They all mean the same thing. A transfer between your own accounts is something else: you move assets inside your own account, for example from the funding account to the trading or futures account. Nothing goes on-chain, and OKX and Bybit both state that there is no fee.

When money actually goes missing, it is usually because of one of three details: the two sides chose different networks, a required Memo/Tag was left out, or the amount was below the minimum. Binance and KuCoin both say that funds sent over the wrong network may be lost and cannot be recovered. Bybit charges 5 times the coin’s withdrawal fee to recover a deposit that was sent without its Tag/Memo.

I compared the wording and rules on the official pages of Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget and KuCoin and put them in a reference table, along with the usual sticking points: withdrawal fees, block confirmations and 24-hour withdrawal holds. Depositing and withdrawing New Taiwan dollars (TWD) is not covered here.

Key points:
1. OKX states that crypto deposits are free and that the withdrawal fee is charged per transaction, regardless of the amount withdrawn. Bybit also states that on-chain deposits and internal transfers are free and that the withdrawal fee is a fixed amount.
2. Binance announced on 2026-09-23 that from 2026-09-29 the Funding Account no longer supports on-chain deposits. Crypto in the Funding Account will gradually be moved to the Spot Account, a migration expected to run until January 2027.
3. After you change your login password, phone number, email or authenticator, OKX, Bybit and Bitget all restrict withdrawals for 24 hours. On Bitget, logging in on a new device also restricts withdrawals from that device for 1 hour.
4. On 2026-10-17, Binance charged 1.5 USDT to withdraw USDT over TRC20 and 0.01 USDT over BEP20. On a 100 USDT withdrawal, that is 1.5% and 0.01% respectively.
5. To recover a deposit sent to Bybit without its Tag/Memo through self-service, you pay 5 times the coin’s withdrawal fee; the assets go back to the original sending address, and transactions older than 180 days are not accepted.

The information below was checked against official pages on 2026-10-17 (the fact-check date) and is provided for reference.

What do deposit and withdrawal mean?

Chinese-speaking traders often say 入金 (“money in”) and 出金 (“money out”). These are colloquial words that rarely appear on exchange interfaces; in English they correspond to a deposit and a withdrawal, often called a cash-out. You can deposit with fiat (buying crypto with a credit card, fiat deposits) or by sending coins in from another exchange or a wallet; a withdrawal goes the other way. This article only covers the crypto side.

The same transfer has a different name depending on which side you are on. The example in KuCoin’s guide to withdrawals and internal transfers (updated 2026-09-17): sending BTC from KuCoin to another platform is a withdrawal for KuCoin and a deposit for the receiving platform. So check both the sender’s withdrawal page and the receiver’s deposit page.

A withdrawal request is the request created when you press submit on the withdrawal page. Submitting it does not mean the funds have arrived. OKX’s withdrawal guide (updated 2026-08-05) splits it into four statuses: “Withdrawal requested”, “Pending”, “Withdrawing” and “Sent”. “Sent” means the assets have left OKX; if you still have not received them, ask the receiving side to look into it. While the status is “Pending”, if a cancel button appears on the page, you can cancel the withdrawal yourself within 1 minute (OKX’s page on wrong or missing tags).

Deposit, withdraw, transfer: what does each exchange call them?

The table below shows the words each exchange actually uses on its Traditional Chinese help pages, with the Chinese UI terms in parentheses. When you switch to a different exchange, look for the matching button first and don’t let the names confuse you.

The easiest one to mix up is 轉帳 (“transfer”). On Binance it means moving assets between your own Spot wallet and Futures wallet; on OKX and KuCoin, 內部轉帳 (“internal transfer”) means sending to another user on the same platform.

What is a transfer between accounts? Is there a fee?

Exchanges split one login into several sub-accounts. OKX’s fund transfer guide (updated 2026-08-26) states that USDT you buy goes into the “Funding account” first; to trade spot or futures, you first have to transfer it to the “Trading account”. Transfers inside your account are free and arrive instantly. In the app the path is “Assets” → “Transfer”; on the website it is “Asset management” → “Fund transfer”.

If a transfer won’t go through, the common reasons OKX lists all come down to the assets still being in use: open positions in the trading account, outstanding debt from spot margin, or assets placed in Earn products that have not been redeemed.

Which sub-account a deposit lands in by default also differs from exchange to exchange:

  • Bybit: the Bybit deposit FAQ (updated 2026-08-14) states that deposits go to the Funding Account by default, and you can change that to the Unified Trading Account on the deposit page or in settings. If you got the arrival email but can’t see the money, look in the Unified Trading Account first.
  • OKX: the deposit page has a “Deposit to” field where you can choose the funding account or the trading account.
  • Binance: the Binance announcement on renaming the Funding Account (published 2026-09-23, updated 09-29) states that from 2026-09-29 the Funding Account no longer supports on-chain deposits. The Funding Account is expected to be renamed the “Stock Account” in January 2027 and used only for settling stocks and stock options, with six supported settlement assets: USD, USDC, USDT, USD1, U and BNB. After the rename, deposits and withdrawals of other crypto tokens will go only through the Spot Account. Assets you have not moved yourself with “One-click migration” will be moved to the Spot Account by the system in batches from January 2027.

As of the fact-check date, Binance’s deposit guide still says you can deposit to the Funding Account, which contradicts the announcement. I follow the newer announcement; in practice, go by the options the deposit page shows.

Binance’s guide to futures wallet transfers also says that USDⓈ-M and COIN-M futures do not share a wallet, so you transfer to each one separately. Futures trading uses leverage: if the price moves against you, your position may be forcibly liquidated and you lose your margin.

What is a network (chain)? What happens if you pick the wrong one?

The same coin can circulate on different blockchains. USDT, for example, exists on TRC20 (TRON), ERC20 (Ethereum), BEP20 (BNB Smart Chain), Solana, TON and others. When you transfer, the network the sender chooses must match the receiver’s deposit network. Binance’s withdrawal guide states that you should pick the network based on what the receiving platform supports, not just the one with the lowest fee; if you choose an incompatible network, your funds may be lost and cannot be recovered. The website picks a network automatically based on the address you paste, but you still need to check it yourself.

A real example: OKX’s deposit guide (updated 2026-10-06) states that “the platform currently does not support USDT on BSC”. If you usually send USDT over BEP20, switch to a different network before sending to OKX. I’ve compiled each exchange’s fees and deposit support per network in USDT withdrawal fees compared.

Whether you can get a mistaken transfer back depends on the receiving side, and recovery usually costs money:

  • Bybit: if you deposit an unsupported coin or chain and it appears on the “Pending assets” page, you can claim it yourself. If it doesn’t, you have to fill in an asset recovery form. Only assets worth more than 500 USD are accepted, there is a flat 200 USD fee, review takes 3 to 5 business days, and Bybit states that recovery is not guaranteed (Bybit rules for recovering unsupported deposits, updated 2026-03-23).
  • OKX: deposits below the minimum deposit amount will not be credited. Only some coins can be recovered, and recovery costs an extra fee (OKX deposit and withdrawal fee guide, updated 2026-08-05). If you withdraw from OKX to your own wallet on the wrong chain and you control that address, you can import the private key or seed phrase into a Web3 wallet and send the funds back (OKX guide to recovering a wrong-network withdrawal).

Run the numbers with Bybit’s rules: if you send coins worth 600 USD to the wrong place, even a successful recovery returns 400 USD after the 200 USD fee, a third less. If they are worth only 450 USD, the request isn’t even accepted.

What is a Memo or Tag? What if you forgot it?

A Memo or Tag (some platforms call it a label, note or Payment ID) is an identifier that tells the platform whose money a deposit is. Binance’s deposit guide explains that it is a unique identifier assigned to each account, and you need it when depositing coins such as XRP, XLM, EOS and ATOM so the funds reach the right account. Bybit puts it more bluntly: for coins that need a Tag/Memo, all Bybit accounts share the same deposit address, so the Tag/Memo must be correct for the deposit to be credited.

Whether you need one depends on the network, not just the coin. Binance’s public network data on 2026-10-17 shows that XRP on the XRP Ledger needs a MEMO while XRP on BEP20 does not, and USDT on TON also needs a MEMO. If the receiver’s deposit page shows a Memo field, copy it exactly.

What to do if you left it out:

  • Deposited to Bybit without it: you can submit a claim through self-service in the Help Center. The fee is 5 times the coin’s Bybit withdrawal fee, deducted from the refunded amount, and the assets go back to the original sending address. If the amount left after the fee is below the minimum withdrawal, the claim is not accepted; transactions older than 180 days, or made before 2024-01-22, cannot be processed (Bybit guide to recovering deposits without a Tag/Memo, updated 2026-10-16). Say a coin’s withdrawal fee on Bybit is 0.2 coins: recovery would then cost 1 coin.
  • Withdrew from OKX without it: if the status is still “Pending” and the page shows a cancel button, cancel within 1 minute. Once it reaches “Withdrawing” it can’t be undone, and after “Sent” it is irreversible: gather the coin, network, amount and transaction hash, then contact the receiving platform (OKX’s page on wrong or missing tags, updated 2026-08-26).

How do withdrawal fees and minimum withdrawals work?

Withdrawal fees are a fixed amount per transaction. OKX’s deposit and withdrawal fee guide states that deposits are free and the withdrawing side pays; the network fee is charged per transaction, has nothing to do with the amount withdrawn, and is adjusted dynamically with network congestion. Bybit’s fee overview also states that on-chain deposits are free, the withdrawal fee is fixed for any amount, and internal transfers to other Bybit accounts carry no withdrawal fee.

Where the fee is taken from affects how much the other side actually receives. In OKX’s new app and on its website, the fee comes out of your balance if the balance is enough, and only comes out of the withdrawal amount if you choose “Withdraw all”; the old app (6.150 and earlier) always deducts it from the withdrawal amount. Binance’s withdrawal page lets you choose: enter the amount the recipient should receive and the fee is added on top, or enter the total withdrawal amount and the fee is deducted from it.

The table below shows the USDT figures on Binance’s deposit and withdrawal fee page on 2026-10-22. I also worked out what share of a 100 and a 1,000 USDT withdrawal the fee takes:

NetworkFee (USDT)Minimum withdrawal (USDT)Share of 100 USDTShare of 1,000 USDT
TRC201.551.5%0.15%
ERC200.630.6%0.06%
Arbitrum One0.330.3%0.03%
Solana0.350.3%0.03%
TON (MEMO required)0.330.3%0.03%
Polygon0.0350.03%0.003%
Plasma0.01250.012%0.0012%
BEP200.0150.01%0.001%

These numbers change. When I checked on 2026-10-12, Binance’s ERC20 fee was 0.5 USDT and the BEP20 minimum withdrawal was 5 USDT; five days later they were 0.4 USDT and 2 USDT, and on 2026-10-22 they were 0.6 USDT and 5 USDT. Before you press withdraw, go by what the withdrawal page shows.

The receiving side has thresholds too. OKX explains that the minimum deposit exists because small deposits can’t be consolidated and the address balance may not cover the miner fee; Bybit states that deposits below the minimum deposit amount will not be credited or refunded. Withdrawal fees are not covered by referral code rebates, which only refund trading fees; see the referral rebate glossary for the difference between the terms.

What are block confirmations? How long does a deposit take?

After an on-chain transfer is sent, the exchange credits it only once the blockchain has added a certain number of block confirmations, and each exchange requires a different number. OKX’s deposit time guide (updated 2026-09-10) gives the examples of 19 confirmations for USDT on the TRON network and 32 for USDT on the Ethereum network. In Binance’s public network data on 2026-10-17, a USDT deposit needs 6 confirmations on Ethereum and 200 on Polygon.

OKX’s deposit page also shows two separate numbers: “confirmations required for crediting” and “confirmations required to unlock withdrawals”. Once the first is reached, you can see the money; until the second is reached, those assets can’t be withdrawn or sold on C2C (OKX’s page on why you can’t withdraw, updated 2026-08-05).

Processing times on the withdrawal side: Bybit states that instant withdrawals may take up to 15 minutes to process. KuCoin states that withdrawals are processed within 30 minutes, amounts above a certain level go through manual review, and a withdrawal can’t be cancelled once it has succeeded. At OKX, when the hot wallet runs short and funds have to be moved from cold storage, withdrawals may be delayed by up to 24 hours (OKX guide to hot and cold wallets). When the network is congested, all of these times get longer.

What is a withdrawal address whitelist? Should you turn it on?

With a whitelist on, your account can only withdraw to addresses saved in advance in your address book. Even if someone takes over your account, they can’t send your coins straight to an unknown address. How each exchange handles it:

  • Binance: when you add an address in Address Management, tick “Add address to whitelist”. With the whitelist enabled, you can only withdraw to whitelisted addresses. The first withdrawal to a new address triggers a security prompt, and Binance recommends sending a small test amount first.
  • OKX: turn on “Address allowlist mode” under “Manage address book” on the withdrawal page; turning it off requires email and phone verification. You can also enable the “new-address withdrawal lock”, which blocks withdrawals to newly added allowlist addresses for 24 hours. New addresses can be set to skip verification for 30 days or permanently.
  • Bitget: “Security center” → “Withdrawal settings” has a whitelist, password-free withdrawals, withdrawal cancellation (you can cancel within 1 minute of submitting) and cross-device withdrawal confirmation (an address entered on the website has to be confirmed in the app).
  • Bybit: has a “New withdrawal address lock”. Turning this feature on or off itself triggers a 24-hour withdrawal restriction.

Sources: OKX’s page on why you can’t withdraw, Bybit withdrawal FAQ (updated 2026-04-12), Bitget withdrawal restrictions guide. Bybit counts on-chain withdrawals, internal transfers, fiat withdrawals, Bybit Card transactions and P2P trades as “withdrawal activity”, and all of them are affected during the 24-hour restriction. OKX also states that you don’t have to wait after linking an email, phone number or authenticator app for the first time.

Another new rule is the Travel Rule. OKX’s guide to additional deposit verification, added on 2026-10-01, says that in regulated regions you may have to provide the sender’s legal name and the source exchange or wallet before a deposit is released. If a deposit or withdrawal requires verifying a private wallet address, you prove you control that address with a wallet signature or an on-chain transfer of a specified amount (the Satoshi test). A signature costs no network fee; the Satoshi test does (OKX private wallet verification guide).

At a legitimate exchange, the withdrawal fee only appears on the withdrawal page and is deducted straight from your account. If someone tells you to first pay a “guarantee deposit”, an “unfreezing fee” or “taxes” before you can withdraw, that is a common scam script. See fake exchange withdrawal scams and crypto exchange scam types; in Taiwan you can also call the 165 anti-fraud hotline (165 反詐騙專線) to check.

Sort out your referral code before your first deposit

Some exchanges treat the first deposit as the cutoff for adding a referral code later. The BingX registration FAQ states that once you have deposited (including sending coins in from another platform and using the “Buy Crypto” feature) or have already invited friends, you can no longer add a referral code to your account, and once bound it can’t be changed or removed. Each exchange’s rules for adding a code later are in can you add a referral code after signing up, and how referral codes work is explained in what is a referral code. The safer order is to sign up with the referral code, confirm it is bound, and then make your first deposit.

FAQ

What does a withdrawal mean on a crypto exchange?

A withdrawal (出金 in colloquial Chinese) moves assets out of the exchange; Chinese interfaces label it 提領, 提幣 or 提現. You pick the same network as the receiver, pay a per-transaction withdrawal fee, and then wait for block confirmations.

What does a deposit mean on a crypto exchange?

A deposit (入金 in colloquial Chinese) puts money or crypto into your exchange account. OKX and Bybit both state that on-chain deposits are free, but the amount has to be above the minimum deposit or it may not be credited.

What is a withdrawal request? Can I cancel it after submitting?

A withdrawal request is the request you submit on the withdrawal page; the funds don’t count as arrived until it has been processed. On OKX, while the status is “Pending” and a cancel button is shown, you can cancel within 1 minute; on Bitget, with “Withdrawal cancellation” turned on, you can cancel within 1 minute of submitting; on KuCoin, a withdrawal can’t be cancelled once it has succeeded.

Do transfers between accounts cost anything?

OKX and Bybit both state that they are free. A transfer moves assets between sub-accounts under your own login and doesn’t go on-chain. For internal transfers to another user on the same platform, Bybit and KuCoin also state that they are free.

What happens if I forget the Memo when withdrawing?

The assets may not be credited, and you will need the receiving platform to recover them manually, which usually costs a fee. Bybit’s recovery fee is 5 times the coin’s withdrawal fee, and transactions older than 180 days are not accepted.

Why can’t I withdraw after changing my password?

It is a security measure. OKX, Bybit and Bitget all restrict withdrawals for 24 hours after you change your login password, phone number, email or authenticator, and the restriction lifts automatically when the time is up.

I’ve already sent my deposit. Why hasn’t the exchange credited it?

There are four common reasons: not enough block confirmations yet, a missing Memo/Tag, the wrong network, or an amount below the minimum deposit. First look up the confirmations on a block explorer with the transaction hash (TxID). If there are enough and the deposit still hasn’t arrived, contact the receiving platform’s support with the TxID.
