Exchange Account Frozen or Withdrawals Restricted? What to Do (2026)

Updated Rules checked 2026-10-18

If your exchange account is frozen or your withdrawals are restricted, the first step is to work out which kind of restriction it is. A withdrawal lock after you change your password or 2FA usually lifts on its own after 24 hours. If you are asked to complete KYC or explain your source of funds, uploading the documents in the notice puts your case into review. An account frozen by law enforcement has to be handled through the agency on the case; exchange support cannot lift it on its own. Whatever the type, appeal only through the support chat, tickets and official email inside the exchange’s app or website. OKX and HTX both state that lifting a restriction costs nothing extra.

The first type is the one people run into most. The help centers of OKX, Bybit, Bitget, KuCoin, Gate, XT and other exchanges all say that changing or resetting your login password, phone number, email or authenticator locks withdrawals for a period. Binance says 24 to 48 hours. At Pionex, if you lose your Google Authenticator and request a manual reset, withdrawals are locked for 72 hours after the reset. This window is a protection mechanism, and Binance, Gate and Pionex all state that it cannot be lifted early.

I went through the official documentation of 13 exchanges (Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, MEXC, Gate, BingX, KuCoin, HTX, XT, WEEX, Pionex and Ourbit) and organized it into three tables: restriction types, withdrawal lock times and appeal channels. After that come the documents to prepare, what to do if you receive scam-related funds, and the scam where fake support agents offer to “unfreeze your account.”

Key points:
1. After you change or reset your password or authenticator, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, KuCoin, Gate, XT and other exchanges restrict withdrawals for 24 hours; Binance states 24 to 48 hours, and the lock cannot be lifted before it ends.
2. OKX restricts withdrawals for 48 hours on accounts that withdrew to a high-risk address. You can still log in, deposit and trade during that time, and this restriction cannot be lifted early either.
3. A manual reset of a lost Google Authenticator at Pionex takes up to 72 hours to review, followed by a 72-hour withdrawal ban, so in the worst case you wait 144 hours (6 days) before you can withdraw.
4. OKX states that when it terminates service to an account for violating its terms of service, the remaining assets can still be withdrawn to an external wallet within 14, 30 or 180 days, depending on the case.
5. OKX states that there is no way to get special treatment by paying or depositing, and WEEX states that it never charges extra fees or deposits; HTX states that appeals are completely free, and that anyone charging fees outside official channels or impersonating staff is running a scam.

The information below was checked against official pages on 2026-10-18 (check date) and is provided for reference.

First, identify the type of restriction

Exchanges usually state the reason in the notification email, an app banner or the restricted page. OKX lists four places to check: the ticket center, your registered email, the banner in the app, and support, where you can ask with your ticket number (OKX: What should I do if my account is restricted?). If KuCoin’s withdrawal page shows “User is banned,” withdrawals on the account have been suspended, and you need to submit a ticket or use live chat to find out why (KuCoin withdrawal restrictions). Use the table below to work out which category you are in.

TypeCommon causesHow long it usually takesWhat you can do
Withdrawal lock after a security changeChanging or resetting the login password, fund password, phone, email, Google Authenticator or passkeyMostly 24 hours; Binance 24 to 48 hours; Pionex 72 hours after a manual authenticator resetWait for the countdown to end; access returns automatically

On regional restrictions, XT lists “logging in from an IP in a country or region where XT does not support trading” as one of the situations that trigger risk control, and Bybit KYC can also fail because the system detects an unsupported country or region (Bybit: reasons KYC fails). Each exchange’s restricted regions are listed in exchange restricted countries.

Withdrawal lock after changing your password or 2FA

This is the most common restriction, and the least worrying. The “actions that trigger it” column below follows each exchange’s official wording; the dates in parentheses are when the help page was updated or published.

Three things stand out in this table. First, 24 hours is the common baseline, but the clock does not always start the same way. Gate states that it counts from the time you changed the security setting, and you can find the exact time in the security log. Pionex states that the 24 hours are calculated in “the local time of the device used to complete the password reset,” so if you switch devices across time zones, the unlock time may not be what you expect.

Second, at some exchanges even actions that “strengthen security” trigger a lock. Pionex bans withdrawals for 24 hours after you link Google Authenticator, and turning Bybit’s new-address withdrawal lock on or off also restricts withdrawals for 24 hours. If you plan to withdraw, it is best to finish all your security changes in one go beforehand.

Third, for the longest cases, add up the total. A manual authenticator reset at Pionex takes up to 72 hours from submitting the request to getting a result, then withdrawals are restricted for another 72 hours after the reset: up to 144 hours in total, or 6 days. Bybit’s self-service reactivation review takes about 5 to 7 business days, followed by another 24 hours without withdrawals, and over a long holiday weekend the calendar wait gets longer. If you need the money on a specific day, change your security settings at least 24 hours ahead, 48 hours ahead on Binance, and allow 6 days if you have lost your authenticator on Pionex.

Asked for KYC or source-of-funds proof: what to prepare

This kind of restriction does not lift on its own; it waits for you to submit documents and for the exchange to review them. OKX states that a periodic compliance review usually requires supporting documents and that this step cannot be skipped. Replying by email or submitting in the app both count, but if you don’t respond, the restriction may be extended or service may even be stopped. The table below lists the document requirements each exchange states officially.

Documents requestedWho states itKey points from the official page
Source of funds (SoF) and source of wealth (SoW) proofBinanceSorted by source: payslips, employment letter, tax records, bank statements showing salary deposits; for crypto investments, account statements from other exchanges or wallet screenshots; documents must be in your own name and show your full name, the issuer’s logo and the date
File formatBinanceOnly non-editable PDF, JPG and PNG are accepted; 300 DPI recommended, all four corners visible, no cropping or filters; screenshots must show the full page, URL, name and date
Source-of-assets videoBinanceA live recording, not a screen recording; it must show you logging in to the source platform, the platform’s name and URL, and the withdrawal record with the TxID, coin and amount, matching the deposit on Binance, all in a single video
Proof of earlier deposits and a selfie holding your IDBybit (self-service reactivation)A screen recording proving the transfer in from another exchange (MP4 or MOV, up to 50MB); a photo of the same ID used for Bybit verification (JPG, JPEG, PNG, up to 3MB); a selfie holding your ID and a handwritten note, and a selfie video reading out your application
Photo holding your IDMEXCUsers restricted after submitting a withdrawal request must submit a photo holding their ID to confirm their identity
Proof of account ownershipXTTo unlock a risk control freeze you must provide sufficient supporting documents proving that you own the account; if the documents don’t meet the requirements or you can’t provide them, your case won’t be handled promptly
Questionnaire or documentsOKX, HTXOKX sends a questionnaire or asks for documents; when HTX’s anti-money-laundering risk control is triggered, you log in to the official website and fill in the HTX security questionnaire

When you actually prepare, a few general principles help: use the same ID you used for KYC; use the original PDFs of bank and exchange statements; have the TxID ready for every incoming transfer so it can be looked up on a block explorer; and hide passwords and other sensitive information when you record. Binance also states that Excel or Word files are generally rejected. For the KYC process itself and each exchange’s verification levels, see the Binance KYC guide, OKX KYC guide and Bybit KYC guide; the site also has KYC pages for other exchanges.

Penalties for trading violations are stricter. WEEX’s rules for abnormal trading have four levels: warning, yellow card, red card and black card. A warning requires you to complete KYC and provide a photo holding your ID. A yellow card deducts rebates, requires video verification, and limits withdrawals to 500U per day once access is restored. A red card limits withdrawals to 100U per day. Violating again during the penalty period, or opening a new account, extends the recovery period (WEEX abnormal trading monitoring standards and handling rules, updated 2025-11-14).

Funds you received are flagged as scam-related (C2C stolen funds)

If your account holds funds from an unknown source, the exchange may restrict the account because of a victim’s report, a law enforcement request or anti-money-laundering risk controls. Here is what each exchange says:

  • MEXC: if you receive assets from an unknown source and the sender or the relevant authorities later recover them, your account may be frozen. MEXC advises not touching those funds and contacting live chat with your UID and a deposit screenshot to trace the source (MEXC account restrictions).
  • XT: lists “the account is suspected of violations and frozen at the request of a judicial authority’s investigation” as one of its risk control reasons (XT risk control freeze explainer).
  • HTX: after receiving a freeze order from a judicial authority, it restricts some or all account functions and freezes the assets. The user should report it to support and also contact the judicial authority to cooperate with the investigation (HTX account restrictions).
  • OKX: after receiving a freeze request from law enforcement, it restricts some or all account functions and freezes the assets; once it receives a valid request to lift the freeze, it processes it as quickly as possible (OKX account risk control handling).

Seen from the reporting side, an exchange’s temporary freeze usually has a time limit. MEXC states that after a victim files a report, a law enforcement request must be submitted within 48 hours for the freeze to stay in place. Ourbit states that within 48 hours of submitting supporting materials, you must add the receipt showing the police accepted the case; otherwise the platform decides case by case whether to lift the freeze (MEXC: reporting stolen funds, Ourbit: reporting abnormal funds). Bybit also separates a “temporary restriction” from a “freeze order”: the former is a precaution, not a legal freeze order, and can be lifted at any time (Bybit: reporting stolen assets). Binance states that without a formal freeze order from law enforcement or a court, it cannot freeze user assets unilaterally (Binance: reporting stolen funds).

In other words, when law enforcement freezes an account, how long it takes to unfreeze depends on the case itself. Exchanges usually cannot disclose case details, and Gate and Binance both state that you should ask the agency handling the case for updates (Gate: handling stolen coins). If you received scam money while selling crypto in C2C (P2P) trading, the damage may not stop at your exchange account: your bank account may also be listed as an alert account. The consequences and how to deal with them are covered in fake exchange withdrawal scams. In Taiwan, you can first call the 165 anti-fraud hotline (165 反詐騙專線) to verify or report.

Pionex’s disable-account feature deserves a separate note. Once you press “Disable account” yourself, trading, withdrawals, internal transfers and fiat withdrawals all stop, the disable cannot be reversed for 72 hours, and support cannot step in early (Pionex guide to disabling your account and unfreeze appeals, updated 2026-09-24). It can stop the bleeding if you suspect your account has been hacked, but know beforehand that everything will be on hold for at least 3 days.

How to write an appeal, and what to watch out for

No wording guarantees an appeal will succeed, and exchanges won’t change their review standards because of how you phrase it. What you can do is submit everything at once so support doesn’t have to keep asking. These are the requirements stated on official pages:

  • State your account details clearly: a Bybit ticket needs your UID, an email address you can receive mail at, a detailed description and attachments (screenshots, transaction records); Bitget recommends including the transaction ID, the error message and your account activity log.
  • Don’t open duplicate tickets: Bybit states that repeat submissions slow down replies.
  • Keep an eye on the chat: a Binance support chat stays open, and keeps your place in the queue, only if you reply within 24 hours. You choose a language before entering the chat and can’t change it once you’re connected to an agent; if your language isn’t supported, you can use English.
  • Follow up: OKX states that if submitted documents show no update after more than 48 hours, you can ask with your ticket number; if you don’t respond to the exchange’s request for documents, the restriction may be extended.
  • Attachment formats: Pionex live chat accepts only JPG/JPEG, PNG and WebP images, up to 10MB each and up to 5 per message; videos up to 100MB per file; attachments sent to [email protected] may not exceed 20MB in total.
  • Keep records: you can download the chat history from Pionex’s support window, and it is a good idea to keep your own copy of the whole appeal.
  • Be truthful: Ourbit states that users bear the consequences of providing false information; at WEEX, opening a new account during a penalty period extends the recovery period.

Be prepared, too, that not every restriction can be appealed. Binance states that you can contact support to ask about or appeal an account restriction, but not all restrictions can be appealed. OKX states that it does not accept appeals against permanent restrictions for confirmed terms of service violations, and Pionex states that an account closure is a final decision. In these cases, what you can do is withdraw your assets within the deadline: OKX gives 14, 30 or 180 days, and a Pionex account that receives a closure notice keeps only the withdrawal function.

Anyone who says they can unfreeze your account is a scammer

People with a restricted account are usually in a hurry, and that is exactly what scam rings count on. The exchanges’ official positions are consistent:

  • OKX: the platform will never ask for your password, verification codes or other sensitive information for any reason, and there is no way to get special treatment by paying or depositing (OKX account risk control handling).
  • HTX: withdrawal restriction appeals go only through the Help Center in the app or the official support email and are completely free; anyone who bypasses official channels, charges fees or impersonates HTX staff is running a scam (HTX anti-fraud announcement).
  • Gate: it has compiled common lines used by fake support agents, such as “Our system detected that your account is suspected of trading tainted coins,” “The risk removal channel is now open” and “This is the platform’s risk removal center,” and states that it will never ask for your password or SMS verification code, never ask you to download any app, and never ask you to transfer or withdraw funds privately (Gate anti-fraud guide).
  • WEEX: it never charges users extra fees or deposits in any form, and never communicates through personal email addresses or private social media accounts (WEEX security alert).
  • MEXC: warns users not to trust third parties offering to help unfreeze accounts, to avoid further losses (MEXC account restrictions).

There is also a simple test: security locks cannot be lifted early in the first place. Binance states that the suspension cannot be lifted before it ends, Gate states that the 24-hour protection cannot be canceled, and Pionex states that even support cannot step in during the 72 hours after you disable your account. If the exchange’s own support can’t do it, an outsider certainly can’t. When someone says they can “speed up the unfreeze,” you can conclude straight away that it is a scam.

If you have already paid an “unfreeze fee” or a “deposit,” stop all transfers first, keep your chats and transfer records, and in Taiwan call the 165 anti-fraud hotline or verify on the 165 anti-fraud website (165 全民防騙網). How to spot fake support agents and fake websites is covered in common exchange scam types.

FAQ

What should I do if my Binance account is frozen?

Log in and read the pop-up prompt, choose “Unlock” and complete the security verification. The result will show as successful, under review or failed, and review results are sent by email. After a successful unlock, you may have to wait up to 48 hours before you can withdraw funds or trade on C2C. If only withdrawals are disabled, a suspension caused by security actions such as a password change lasts 24 to 48 hours and ends automatically; if withdrawals were disabled because of unusual activity, you need to complete identity verification and wait for the review, and if it fails you can tap “Withdrawal Appeal” on the withdrawal page.

How long after changing my password can I withdraw?

At most exchanges, 24 hours. OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate, HTX, XT and WEEX all state 24 hours; KuCoin states 24 hours after you reset your login password with “Forgot password”; Binance states 24 to 48 hours. Pionex suspends withdrawals for 24 hours after a password reset, calculated in the local time of the device used to complete the reset; if you lost your Google Authenticator and went through a manual reset, withdrawals are restricted for 72 hours after the reset.

How long does an OKX account restriction last?

It depends on the type. After you change security settings, withdrawals and C2C selling are restricted for 24 hours; withdrawing to a high-risk address brings a 48-hour restriction. Both lift automatically. A T+N restriction triggered by a C2C purchase lasts 3, 7 or 15 calendar days; risk control reviews and law enforcement freezes have no fixed time. If submitted documents still show no update after 48 hours, you can ask support with your ticket number.

If my account is frozen, will the money in it be confiscated?

A freeze is not confiscation. At OKX, for example, when an account’s service is permanently terminated for violating the terms of service, the remaining assets can still be withdrawn to an external wallet within 14, 30 or 180 days; Pionex also keeps the withdrawal function after a closure notice. For assets frozen by law enforcement, contact the agency handling the case; the exchange can only act on law enforcement’s requests.

If my account is frozen, can I open a new account and keep trading?

It isn’t recommended, and most exchanges don’t allow it. Bybit states that each user can have only one verified account and the same ID cannot verify a second account; WEEX states that opening a new account during a violation penalty period extends the recovery period. Sorting out the problem with the original account is the more practical route.

How long does an exchange appeal take?

Only a few exchanges give a time. Bybit tickets get a reply within 3 to 7 business days; XT risk control appeals are reviewed within 3 to 7 business days; Bybit self-service reactivation takes about 5 to 7 business days; Pionex’s review to unfreeze a disabled account usually takes about 3 business days; OKX T+N appeals usually get a reply within 3 calendar days. The other exchanges’ official pages don’t state a processing time.

Someone says paying a deposit will unfreeze my account. Can I trust them?

No, it’s a scam. OKX states that there is no way to get special treatment by paying or depositing, HTX states that appeals are completely free, and WEEX states that it never charges extra fees or deposits. Appeals at legitimate exchanges happen only through support and tickets inside the app or official website. If you get a request like this in Taiwan, you can call the 165 anti-fraud hotline to verify it.

If I think my account was hacked, can I freeze it myself first?

Yes, most exchanges have a self-service freeze. On MEXC you can freeze the account in the security settings, or ask live chat for help if you can’t log in; on BingX you can request an account lock and later unlock it by emailing from your linked address or through live chat; Pionex’s “Disable account” stops trading and withdrawals and cannot be reversed for 72 hours. After a KuCoin account is unfrozen, withdrawals are suspended for another 24 hours.
