Is Bitget Safe? Is It a Scam? Withdrawals, Reserves and Review After the 2026-09 Hack of About USD 388 Million (2026)

Updated Rules checked 2026-10-13

The first thing to know about Bitget’s record is the hack on 2026-09-24: about 388 million USD was moved out of some of its hot and warm wallets. Bitget said its protection fund would cover the loss and user account balances were unaffected; deposits and trading never stopped, withdrawals resumed in stages, and everything was restored on 2026-10-02, about 7.5 days in total. The reserve snapshot taken after the incident, on 2026-09-29, showed a total reserve ratio of 131%, with BTC at 142%, ETH 110% and USDT 107%.

Auto fee rebate (fee discount)20%

On fees, regular users (VIP 0) pay 0.1% for both maker and taker on spot, or 0.08% with the BGB discount turned on; futures are maker 0.02% and taker 0.06%, higher than the 0.05% futures taker fee at Binance, OKX and Gate. On products, Bitget lets you copy trades on both spot and futures, and it offers many kinds of bots. For users in Taiwan, Bitget is not on the anti-money-laundering registration list of the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC, 金融監督管理委員會), and its P2P has no New Taiwan dollars (TWD), so you have to convert TWD to USDT on a local platform first and then transfer it over.

This review gives no star rating. It only compiles dated, sourced information: fees, referral rebates, proof of reserves, security and regulatory records, restricted regions and products, and ends with which kinds of traders Bitget suits best.

Key points: on 2026-09-24, about 388 million USD was stolen from Bitget’s hot and warm wallets; Bitget said its protection fund would cover the loss and user balances were unaffected, and withdrawals were fully restored on 2026-10-02, about 7.5 days in total. The reserve snapshot of 2026-09-29, taken after the hack, showed a total reserve ratio of 131%, with BTC at 142%, ETH 110% and USDT 107%. Bitget’s VIP 0 spot fees are 0.1% / 0.1% (0.08% with the BGB discount), and futures are maker 0.02% and taker 0.06%. The prohibited countries in Bitget’s terms of use (2026-09-15 version) include the United States, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, but not Taiwan. As of the list updated by the Securities and Futures Bureau on 2026-09-29, Bitget is not on the FSC anti-money-laundering registration list.

The information below was checked against official pages on 2026-10-13 (the data check date) and is provided for reference. The original check date of each figure is given in the matching section.

What are Bitget’s fees?

MarketMakerTakerWith platform token discountNotes
Spot0.1%0.1%0.08% / 0.08%Turning on the BGB discount gives 20% off; if you don’t hold enough BGB, that trade is paid in full in the traded coin
Futures (USDT-margined, coin-margined, USDC)0.02%0.06%Not availableCharged on position value; perpetual contracts also have funding rates

The rates come from the Bitget trading fee FAQ (updated 2026-08-20) and the Bitget fee page, checked on 2026-10-11. BGB only discounts spot; futures have no platform token discount. The Bitget fee page also states that a few coins don’t use the standard rates during certain periods, so go by your trade history.

Futures fees are charged on position value, not margin. Open a 10x position with 1,000 USDT of margin and the position is 10,000 USDT; opening and closing as taker costs 10,000 × 0.06% × 2 = 12 USDT, or 1.2% of your margin, and opening and closing as maker costs 4 USDT. With leveraged trading, if the price moves against you, your position may be liquidated and you can lose your entire margin.

Bitget has an upgrade path few people notice: you reach a VIP level by meeting any one of the trading volume, asset or BGB holding requirements, and 50,000 USDT in account assets is enough for VIP 2, which brings futures to maker 0.016% and taker 0.04%. In other words, if you already keep 50,000 USDT or more in your account, your futures taker fee drops by a third without any extra trading volume.

Here it is next to the other exchanges this site has compared, for a trader doing 200,000 USDT in futures and 20,000 USDT in spot each month, all as taker:

The formula is 200,000 × futures taker + 20,000 × spot taker, using each exchange’s standard VIP 0 rates checked against its official pages on 2026-10-11, without platform token discounts. The full VIP table, BGB rules and withdrawal fees are in Bitget fees, and to try your own position size and leverage, use the futures cost calculator.

How much is the Bitget referral code rebate? Has it changed?

For Bitget accounts registered with this site’s referral code, the exchange currently refunds 20% of net fees automatically, on both spot and futures. Below are the changes to the rebate rate this site has recorded.

  • 20% (tracking started)

Rates sync with the exchange daily; every change is recorded automatically.

A few points in Bitget’s official rebate rules are worth knowing first (Bitget affiliate FAQ, Bitget promotion policy):

  • Calculation base: the net fees the invited user actually pays, meaning fees minus the discounted portion; the referrer’s commission is settled daily for the previous day’s trades, and the invitee’s rebate is shared out of that commission.
  • Duration: rebates under the affiliate program are valid long term, with no expiry date. The standard referral program states separately that fees generated after an invitee reaches VIP 3 or above don’t count toward rebates.
  • Trades that earn no rebate: zero-fee trading pairs generate no commission; for trades using fee rebate vouchers, the commission is paid in rebate vouchers instead.
  • Revocation: referrals from the same IP or device are treated as self-referrals; for multiple accounts or fake referrals, Bitget can revoke eligibility and claw back rebates already paid.
  • Adding a code later: the referral code can only be entered at sign-up, and we found no official way to add or switch one after registering.

The referral code and how to sign up are in the Bitget referral code; if you’ve already registered and want to know the limits on switching referrers, see the Bitget referral switch guide.

Does Bitget have proof of reserves?

Yes. It publishes one every month and provides a Merkle tree so users can confirm their balance is included. The latest is the 2026-09-29 snapshot, taken after the hack:

ItemBitget proof of reserves

Sources: the Bitget proof of reserves page, the Bitget September reserves announcement and the Bitget announcement for report no. 46 (2026-09-17).

How to read these numbers: 131% means that at that moment on 2026-09-29, the user assets Bitget included in the calculation were backed 1.31 times over by coins. It doesn’t include the company’s own borrowing and other liabilities, and it can’t show whether the coins in its wallets have been pledged as collateral. Bitget’s protection fund is also a separate pool of money from its reserves; the incident page updated on 2026-10-04 shows 3,705 BTC, more than 314 million USD. Dividing 3,705 BTC by the 20,531.72 BTC users hold in the PoR gives roughly 18.0%; the protection fund has to cover losses in every coin, so this ratio only gives a sense of scale and is not a compensation cap. The reserve ratios of all 13 exchanges side by side are in exchange proof of reserves compared.

What security or withdrawal incidents has Bitget had?

Under the inclusion criteria of this site’s exchange safety record (official announcements first, then major media and regulators’ announcements), Bitget’s record is as follows:

  • 2023-03-31 and 2024-11-28: Japan’s Financial Services Agency issued Bitget two warnings for operating without registration; in February 2025, it asked Apple and Google to remove the apps of Bitget and other exchanges in Japan (The Defiant).
  • 2025-04-20: abnormal trading hit the VOXEL/USDT perpetual contract for about 30 minutes; Bitget restricted suspicious accounts, rolled back the abnormal trades and offered affected users a compensation plan (The Block).
  • August 2025: the Philippine SEC named 10 unregistered platforms, Bitget among them, and telecom providers then blocked them (Cointelegraph).
  • 2026-09-24: some hot and warm wallets were hacked, initially reported as about 351.6 million USD (CoinDesk) and later confirmed at about 388 million USD. The timeline is below.

The 2026-09-24 hot wallet hack: timeline

At 18:31 (UTC), Bitget detected unusual outflows from some hot and warm wallets, involving 12 addresses. According to Bitget, the attacker used a zero-day vulnerability in a third-party security product to obtain internal credentials, then forged withdrawal instructions to get past risk controls; no private keys were leaked, and cold wallets were unaffected (Bitget incident page, updated 2026-10-04). Bitget said account balances were correct and unaffected, and that the protection fund would cover the loss rather than passing it on to users; Mandiant and SlowMist are assisting with the investigation.

Date (UTC)What happenedTime since detection
2026-09-24 18:31Unusual outflows detected, withdrawals suspended; deposits and trading continued as normal—
2026-09-28 08:00BTC withdrawals resumedAbout 3.5 days
2026-09-29ETH withdrawals resumed—
2026-09-30USDT withdrawals resumed; Bitget announced the protection fund had been topped back up by more than 300 million USD—
2026-10-02 08:00Withdrawals resumed for other coins, fiat and P2PAbout 7.5 days
2026-10-04Incident page updated: protection fund at 3,705 BTC, more than 314 million USD—

I calculated the number of days from the official times; the official page doesn’t give the exact times ETH and USDT resumed, so no day count is given for them. The protection fund held more than 464 million USD when the hack happened (The Block, 2026-09-25); after about 388 million USD was used, Bitget pledged on 09-28 to top it back up by at least 300 million USD within a week and announced on 09-30 that it had done so (Bitget announcement).

Among the records of the 13 exchanges, this is the most recent of the 8 platform wallet hacks this site has recorded, and its size is second only to Bybit’s roughly 1.5 billion USD in 2025. What users actually bore was the time withdrawals were suspended: about 3.5 days for BTC, and about 7.5 days for other coins, fiat and P2P.

Which countries can’t use Bitget?

The prohibited countries listed in the definitions of the Bitget terms of use (updated 2026-09-15) are: Austria, Canada, Crimea, Cuba, Donetsk, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Luhansk, Malaysia, North Korea, Singapore, Sudan, the United States (including territories such as Puerto Rico and Guam), Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Lebanon, Somalia, South Sudan and Thailand. Taiwan is not on the list.

Of the 16 regions this site compares, Bitget lists 7 as not served (the United States, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand), and in the EU it only lists Austria, France and Germany. Section 8.6 of the terms states that if you are in a prohibited country, you may be blocked, which affects trading and viewing your orders and positions, and that you may not get around this with a VPN or similar means. A region missing from the terms doesn’t mean it’s allowed there either: the Philippines isn’t on the list, for example, but the Philippine SEC named Bitget in 2025. The 13 exchanges compared are in exchange restricted countries.

What products does Bitget offer?

  • Spot and futures: futures come in three types, USDT-margined, coin-margined and USDC. In the official API read on 2026-10-12, 839 perpetual contracts were actively settling funding: 451 every 8 hours, 387 every 4 hours (46%) and 1 every hour; on the same day, the official API showed BTC’s funding rate cap and floor at ±0.3% (Bitget funding rate guide). Funding is paid between longs and shorts; it isn’t a trading fee and earns no rebate. How it’s calculated is in what is the funding rate.
  • Copy trading: you can copy both futures and spot, so if you want copy trading without leverage, you can copy spot only. The profit share uses a high-water mark, charging only on new profit that hasn’t been shared yet, and is settled daily at 00:00 (Taiwan time). A 2026-01-26 announcement puts the profit share cap at 10% for now, up to 30% after review, but the product fee FAQ of 2026-08-20 says it’s generally 10% to 20%; go by the lead trader’s page. The minimum to copy is 50 USDT, with default slippage of 0.5% (Bitget high-water mark profit share guide, Bitget copy trading upgrade announcement).
  • Trading bots: grid (up to 1,000 grids), martingale, recurring buy, funding rate arbitrage and trend following, plus a futures signal bot that connects to TradingView (Bitget trading bots).
  • Earn: flexible USDT savings at a floating rate. The 2026-10-13 snapshot showed 7.50% APR on the first 300 USDT and 2.84% on the rest; for 10,000 USDT, that works out to about 2.98% overall. Interest starts at 00:00 (UTC+8) the day after you subscribe and is credited the day after that, and you can redeem at any time; 7-day fixed savings pay 1.30% (Bitget Earn). The exchanges are compared in USDT flexible savings rates compared.
  • Other: tokenized stocks and ETFs, PoolX, Convert (no trading fee, but its quote differs from the spot price), P2P (no fee for buying or selling) and the separate Bitget Wallet.

The cost of copy trading is often underestimated. Copy orders are mostly taker orders that fill immediately. Copy a lead trader who makes 40 round trips a month with 1,000 USDT at 5x leverage, and the position is 5,000 USDT; the fees alone come to 5,000 × 0.06% × 2 × 40 = 240 USDT, so the lead trader has to make 24% before you break even. Bitget doesn’t state whether the profit share is calculated after fees, or whether fees from copy trading earn a referral code rebate; the details are in the cost of copy trading.

What should users in Taiwan watch out for on Bitget?

  • FSC registration: as of the list updated on 2026-09-29 in the Securities and Futures Bureau’s “virtual asset service providers” section, Bitget is not on the FSC anti-money-laundering registration list. In its statement on the FTX collapse on 2022-11-23, the FSC pointed out that offshore trading platforms aren’t covered by the dispute mechanisms of the Securities and Futures Investors Protection Center or the Financial Ombudsman Institution (FSC press release), so a frozen account or restricted withdrawals can only be handled under Bitget’s terms.
  • TWD deposits and withdrawals: Bitget has no TWD bank deposits, and when we checked on 2026-10-11, TWD wasn’t in the fiat menu on Bitget P2P either. The workable route is to buy USDT with TWD on a registered local platform (such as MAX or BitoPro) and transfer it in, and to reverse the route to withdraw.
  • Withdrawal fees: in the Bitget official coin API read on 2026-10-22, USDT costs 0.01 USDT on BEP20, 1.5 USDT on TRC20 and 2 USDT on ERC20, with a minimum withdrawal of 5 USDT on every network. The cheapest way to transfer to MAX or BitoPro is BEP20 in both cases, 1.49 USDT less than TRC20. The full comparison is in the USDT withdrawal fee comparison.
  • Identity verification: since 2024-01-01, verification is required before both deposits and trading; once verified, VIP 0 can withdraw 3 million USDT every 24 hours, and one ID document can verify only one account (Bitget individual verification FAQ).
  • Know the official channels: Bitget states that only www.bitget.com should be trusted, and the developer on the Taiwan App Store and Google Play is BG LIMITED in both cases; you can check customer service or community accounts with Bitget official verification. Impersonation tactics are covered in crypto exchange scam types.
  • Transfer rules: the FSC’s plan of 2026-08-04 says the transfer rules (Travel Rule) are expected to extend to transfers between domestic and offshore providers by the end of 2027 (FSC press release), after which the process for moving coins between local platforms and Bitget may change.

Who is Bitget best for?

Based on its fees and products, Bitget works better for these kinds of traders:

  • People who want copy trading without leverage: Bitget lets you copy spot only; MEXC, which also offers copy trading, lists futures copy trading on its website.
  • People who want bots beyond grids: funding rate arbitrage, trend following and the TradingView signal bot are all among its official products.
  • People who already hold 50,000 USDT or more in their account: assets alone get you to VIP 2, cutting the futures taker fee from 0.06% to 0.04%.
  • People who often move USDT back to MAX or BitoPro: BEP20 costs only 0.01 USDT, and both Taiwanese exchanges accept it.

The cases where it fits less well are just as clear. If you trade futures at VIP 0 and often use market orders, a 0.06% taker fee is on the high side among the exchanges this site compares: for the same 200,000 USDT of futures a month, you pay 40 USDT on MEXC and 120 USDT on Bitget. If you didn’t double-check the referral code before signing up, note that Bitget has no way to add or switch it afterward. And its most recent platform wallet hack was as recent as September 2026; if that concerns you, you can keep coins you don’t trade for long periods in a wallet you control yourself and leave only what you need for trading on the exchange.

FAQ

Is Bitget safe?

All you can look at is the record; no exchange can guarantee safety. On 2026-09-24, about 388 million USD was stolen from Bitget’s hot and warm wallets; Bitget said its protection fund would cover the loss and user balances were unaffected, and withdrawals were fully restored after about 7.5 days. The reserve snapshot of 2026-09-29, taken after the hack, showed a total reserve ratio of 131%. On regulation, Japan’s Financial Services Agency has issued it two warnings, the Philippine SEC named it in 2025, and Bitget is not on the FSC anti-money-laundering registration list either.

Is Bitget a scam?

Bitget itself is not a scam; it is an exchange in actual operation: the official site is bitget.com, and the 2026-09-15 version of its terms of use states that the services are provided by BTG Technology Holdings Limited (Bitget terms of use). What people online call a “Bitget scam” is usually a fake website, fake app, fake customer support or fake investment group using Bitget’s name. The usual demands are to add someone on LINE, to transfer USDT to a “platform” outside the exchange, or to pay an “unfreezing fee” or “security deposit” before you can withdraw. Suspicious URLs, emails or social media accounts can be checked with Bitget official verification. Not being a scam doesn’t mean there’s no risk: Bitget’s hot wallets were hacked as recently as 2026-09-24, and Bitget is not on the FSC’s AML registration list either, so any dispute can only be handled under the platform’s terms. Impersonation tactics are covered in crypto exchange scam types, and rebate-related scams in rebate scam warning signs.

Can I still withdraw from Bitget after the hack?

Yes. Since 2026-10-02 08:00 (UTC), withdrawals have been restored for all coins, fiat and P2P. BTC came back first on 09-28, followed by ETH on 09-29 and USDT on 09-30; deposits and trading never stopped during the incident. Bitget said its protection fund would cover the loss, and nothing was deducted from user account balances.

Could Bitget go bankrupt?

No data can guarantee that an exchange won’t go under, and proof of reserves can’t either. The PoR only shows that at that moment on 2026-09-29, the user assets Bitget included in the calculation were 131% backed by coins; it doesn’t include the company’s liabilities, and it says nothing about what comes after. When an offshore exchange collapses, the process runs in the jurisdiction where the platform is based, as when FTX filed for US bankruptcy protection on 2022-11-11, and Taiwan’s Securities and Futures Investors Protection Center can’t help.

Can I withdraw from Bitget to a bank in Taiwan?

Not directly to a Taiwanese bank account. Bitget has no TWD deposits or withdrawals, and TWD isn’t in the P2P fiat menu either (checked on 2026-10-11). The usual approach is to withdraw USDT to MAX or BitoPro, sell it for TWD there, and then withdraw to your bank under that platform’s rules. Transferring out of Bitget on BEP20 costs 0.01 USDT, with a minimum of 5 USDT per withdrawal (checked on 2026-10-22).

Can I use Bitget in Taiwan?

Taiwan isn’t among the prohibited countries in Bitget’s terms of use (2026-09-15 version), the Bitget app is available on the Taiwan App Store, and the website has a Traditional Chinese version. But Bitget is not on the FSC anti-money-laundering registration list, so disputes aren’t covered by Taiwan’s Securities and Futures Investors Protection Center or the Financial Ombudsman Institution. The terms state that the list changes over time, so check the latest version before using it.

How big is Bitget’s protection fund?

The incident page updated on 2026-10-04 shows 3,705 BTC, more than 314 million USD. The protection fund was set up in 2022 with 5,500 BTC, Bitget states that it keeps a minimum of 300 million USD, and the wallet addresses are public on the Bitget protection fund page; it was this fund that covered the 2026-09-24 loss, and it was topped back up by more than 300 million USD on 09-30.

Are Bitget’s fees high?

Spot is in line with most exchanges, while the futures taker fee is on the high side. At VIP 0, spot is 0.1% / 0.1%, or 0.08% with the BGB discount; the futures taker fee of 0.06% is higher than the 0.05% at Binance, OKX, Gate and BingX and the 0.055% at Bybit, the same as KuCoin, while MEXC charges 0.02%. With 50,000 USDT in account assets, you can move up to VIP 2, where the futures taker fee becomes 0.04%.

To open an account or confirm the referral code, see the Bitget referral code; fee details are in Bitget fees, and if you’ve already registered, see the Bitget referral switch guide and how to check whether a referral code is bound. To compare with other exchanges, there’s Bybit vs Bitget, BingX vs Bitget, Bitget vs OKX, Bitget vs MEXC and KuCoin vs Bitget; two more exchange reviews are the MEXC review and the Gate review.
